How often should you repaint your wooden windows or shutters?

Whew, your wooden window frames are fine again: fully dusted, degreased and painted. How long can you enjoy them now before they need repainting? That depends on all sorts of factors. We list them for you.

On average, you should repaint your wooden shutters or window frames every 5 to 7 years. Exactly how often you should paint them depends on the following elements:

  1. The paint you use. How good is the quality of the paint? Usually, the more expensive paints are slightly higher quality, which means they are less likely to flake or discolour and therefore less likely to need repainting. The type of paint also plays a role: synthetic paint, for example, does not retain its colour as well (five to six years) as acrylic paint (seven to eight years). Sigma's water-based paint, for example, lasts about five years, while the silk-gloss solvent-based paint Tigron Extreme lasts about 10 years.
  2. The environment and weather conditions also determine how soon your windows and shutters need repainting. In wooded areas or at the coast, shutters and window frames undergo more wear and tear than in other areas. The sun also does damage to shutters or window frames. Thus, you may need to repaint shutters hanging on the side facing the sun much faster than those hanging in the shade.
  3. In addition, maintenance is important. The better maintained your window frames and shutters are, the longer the paint will last. Wondering how best to maintain your shutters and window frames? Then read this article

How do I know when to repaint my windows or shutters?

If you are going to paint wooden window frames or doors that have already been painted once, you should first check whether the existing paint layer is still intact. You can do that with the cross cut test!

  • Use a cutter knife and superficially cut 5 horizontal and 5 vertical lines (so that they cross each other)
  • Apply a piece of masking tape.
  • If you pull the tape off and the paint sticks to it, it doesn’t adhere well.

Is that the case? Then remove all the paint with, for example with V33 Super Afbijtmiddel or Vista Lakweg. By removing the old paint layer, you will get untreated wood and you will have to paint the windows according to our step-by-step plan.

What you do yourself, you do better!

Finally, we give some tips on how to take care of your woodwork in the best possible way:

  • Clean with lukewarm water, a soft cloth and a non-caustic detergent
  • Check caulking and repair if necessary
  • Sand down small cracks or fissure
  • Repaint where necessary
