Dare to go dark? How to paint a dark wall perfectly!
The impact of a dark wall: Why you should definitely go for it
Before you roll up your sleeves, let's look at what dark shades actually do to a room. While light colors make a space look larger or higher, dark colors bring intimacy and a sense of coziness.
Are you still secretly a bit hesitant to make the leap? There's absolutely no need! A dark accent wall comes with a whole host of benefits:
- Instant ambiance and coziness: A large, white room can sometimes feel cold. Dark tones immediately bring warmth and comfort to the space, making it ideal for rooms where you love to unwind in the evening.
- Make your furniture and art truly 'pop': Have a beautiful wooden cabinet, a colorful painting, or gold home accessories? They often get lost against a white wall, but against a dark backdrop, the colors and materials stand out as if they're on display in a museum.
- The ultimate hotel-chic vibe: There is a reason luxury boutique hotels and high-end restaurants love dark colors. It exudes instant luxury, design, and exclusivity. Ready to create your own hotel-chic interior?
- The secret weapon against the TV 'black hole': A large, black television on a stark white wall can be a real eyesore. If you paint that wall black, dark blue, or dark green, the TV seamlessly blends into the background when turned off.
- More calm and better focus: Because a dark wall reflects less light, it reduces visual stimulation. This creates a calming effect, making it ideal for a good night's sleep in the bedroom or deep focus in your home office.
Step-by-step guide: How to paint a wall in a dark color
An unfortunate truth is that painting with dark colors is slightly less forgiving than working with light shades. That's why it's a good idea to follow this step-by-step guide to ensure a flawless, streak-free finish!
Step 1: Taping is even more crucial here
With a white wall, a tiny slip of the brush onto the baseboard barely notices. With dark green or deep blue, it's a completely different story—the last thing you want is dark paint splatters on your light walls or ceiling. That's why you should tape everything off meticulously with high-quality masking tape.
- For walls: Use 3M purple painter's tape (it gives you razor-sharp lines and prevents paint from bleeding underneath).
- For woodwork: Go for 3M gold masking tape for excellent adhesion.
- For the messy painter: Grab the extra-wide 48mm version. It gives you a little extra room for error!
Step 2: Smooth out every single imperfection
When you paint a wall in a vibrant or dark color, tiny imperfections in the surface suddenly become much more visible. So, take your time with the prep work. Got small pits or nail holes? You can fill them in a flash with Red Devil Onetime.

Sand everything down smoothly afterward.
Step 3: Apply a primer tinted to your final color
Here is a pro-tip from the experts: primer doesn't always have to be white!
Have your undercoat or primer tinted to the exact same color as your final topcoat. This massively improves coverage, meaning you'll need fewer coats of wall paint later on.
Step 4: Opt for semi-matte or satin paint
The wall paint you choose has the biggest impact on the final look. Our strongest advice for dark, vibrant colours: avoid flat matte wall paint. If you apply a dark color in a matte finish, you'll quickly run into the so-called 'marring effect'. This is industry slang for those annoying white or shiny scuffs that appear on the wall the moment you gently brush past it with your hand or a bag.
In addition, matte paint doesn't reflect enough light, causing a dark colour to lose the rich depth that makes it come alive.
To prevent this, always opt for a semi-matte or satin paint for dark colours. Our absolute number one recommendation and a firm favorite among professionals is Sigma Perfect Semi-Matt.

Step 5: Use the right roller and work 'wet-on-wet'
Highly pigmented paints (like black or deep navy blue) aren't absorbed and distributed as well by standard rollers.
Our ProGold Microfibre paint roller is your best friend here. This roller releases the paint evenly, ensuring a beautiful, smooth finish.
Crucial painting technique: Always work wet-on-wet to avoid the dreaded 'picture-framing' effect. If you cut in all the edges with a brush first and wait hours to roll the main wall, the edges will dry too quickly. You'll end up seeing a dark, shiny frame all around your wall.
Instead, cut in a section at a time and roll it out immediately with the large roller while the paint is still wet.
Step-6: Be patient with coverage and drying time
Dark paint is packed with pigment, which means it sometimes takes a bit longer to fully bond and dry.
Don't panic if the first coat looks a bit patchy once it dries. For an intense, deep, and even result, a dark wall always requires at least two topcoats.
Additionally, wait a few days before pushing furniture back against the wall to give the paint plenty of time to fully cure.
What to consider when choosing a dark paint color?
Choosing the perfect color from the color chart is step one, but how that color ultimately looks on your wall depends entirely on one crucial factor: the light in the room.
The secret of natural light: Why dark paint needs light
It might sound contradictory, but a dark paint color actually needs enough light to truly come to life. Only when light hits the wall are the deep pigments activated, allowing you to see the true nuances of the paint.
Too little light is unfortunately disastrous for beautiful, rich shades like dark blue or dark green. Without enough light, the color could look dark gray or black. Do you want your chosen color to truly sparkle and show character? Then opt for a room with plenty of daylight, or compensate for a dark corner with strategically placed, warm artificial lighting (such as spotlights or a beautiful floor lamp).
Plenty of daylight combined with the best wall paint for dark colors (Sigma Perfect Semi-Matt) will give your color the depth it deserves.
Inspiration with dark paint colours
Still unsure about the right shade? Take a look at how these beautiful dark colors transform a space:
Wall in dark green
The restroom is the one room in the house where you absolutely don't want to feel a chill. Do you have a reasonably spacious toilet room? Then you can paint all the walls in the same dark color, just like in this example. Here, the choice was made to paint both the ceiling and the walls in dark green. It looks great in combination with vintage elements like the rug and the marble look.
Wall in dark red
Did you know that dark colors in the bedroom can help you fall asleep faster? For instance, painting the bedroom ceiling in a dark color is a popular choice. But the walls often get a darker shade too. Here, the choice was made to paint the wall in dark burgundy for an ultimate sense of security.
Wall in black
At Tintrio, we chose to paint the meeting room in black and white. These are neutral colors, with the black paint giving the room more depth. Did you know, by the way, that dark colors can help you get into and stay in focus mode faster and longer? A black wall is therefore perfect for an office space or home office.
Wall in dark blue
In the office or reading room, you shouldn't be afraid to go for dark colors. Dark blue was chosen here. Not a strange choice when you know that two centuries ago, people also standardly painted the 'study' dark. Less light means less distraction. And a space like that actually coaxes you inward a bit to work or read in wonderful peace.
And what about painting over a dark paint colour with white?
Have you grown tired of your dark look over time and want to return to a light, fresh base? Don't panic, you don't have to apply dozens of coats. With this little plan, the job will be done in no time:
Go for a good insulating primer: When the current color is extremely dark like black or dark blue (or a vibrant red), you're better off choosing a light gray primer coat instead of a white one. It sounds counterintuitive, but gray breaks down the intense power of the dark base much better, preventing the color from bleeding through your topcoat.
You can fill in this colour code: RAL 7035 (light grey)
Go for a wall paint with high hiding power: If you choose the high-coverage Sigma Perfect Matt wall paint, you will probably be able to completely mask the dark paint color in just two coats. Thanks to the special Smooth Layer Technology, you will barely have to deal with lap marks or roller lines. This makes the paint ideal for turning even jet-black walls back into radiant white! (As a side note, for white colors you can choose the matte Sigma Perfect. You can read more about this on the collection page)
