Which paint do I need for my doors and windows?

Are your windows and doors in need of a makeover but are you not sure which paint you need? Don't worry, we'll guide you through it.

Below we recommend different types of paint such as lacquers and stains for your window frames and both interior and exterior doors. We specify this for different surfaces such as wood, PVC, plastic and aluminium.

It is definitely worth scrolling through this paint guide, as you will find the suitable product for your painting project: windows and doors. 👇

Wall paint on a door? Yes or no?

Painting a door with wall paint is not a good idea. Conversely, you could apply a lacquer to make sure your wall is also very scratch-resistant. However, lacquer is much more expensive than wall paint and applying wall paint to a wall is obviously the most common choice.

How much paint do I needed for a door?

If you want to paint both sides of your door and apply two coats of paint, think of +/- 0.75l paint per door.

Do you also want to paint the frame? Then read the extra info on the efficiency of lacquer for windows and doors here. Doorframes can of course be painted in the same lacquer as your door, but in some interiors they choose to paint the skirting boards and frames all in the same colour as the wall. However, that choice is entirely up to you.

Lacquers for interior doors and window frames

Painting your interior doors and windows is done with a lacquer primer and a finishing lacquer. Which primer you choose depends on the surface.

If your door/window is made of wood, you can use Levis Simply Refresh Windows & Doors. A handy feature of this lacquer paint: you do not need an additional primer and you can paint a complete door with 1 pot of 0.75l in a two-coat system.

Are you someone who always seeks perfection and wants to work with the best paint for interior doors and windows?

Then our professional painter's favourite is sure to please you. In fact, professional painters recommend starting with 1 coat of Sigma Tigron Aqua Primer, followed by 2 coats of Sigma tigron Aqua SatinThis lacquer paint is resistant to skin oils, which means that fingerprints will not damage your paint. With an ‘ordinary’ lacquer without this special feature, your paint would start to soften after a while.

Interior doors and windows made of PVC or aluminium

Do you need paint for interior windows and doors made of PVC or aluminium? Painting these surfaces is not that different from painting interior wooden doors or wooden window frames on the inside of your house.

In fact, the topcoat is completely the same. You only need a different primer, namely one that adheres to PVC and aluminium. Of course, we have this in our range. You can find these special primers with the search term 'multiprimer' or 'universal primer'. Indoors, you should work with a water-based primer as it is odourless.

For instance, you can perfectly start with Levis paint Simply Refresh Ramen & Deuren when you first apply a coat of Levis Expert Universal primer.

And when you like to paint with the same paint as our professional painters, you can apply 1 coat of Sigma Multiprimer Aqua to your PVC or aluminium surface. Then apply two coats of the finishing paint Sigma Tigron Aqua Matt or Satin for a stunning result that will last up to 15 years.

Exterior front door paint

Are you rather looking for front door paint or an exterior window frame paint to give your windows a new colour? Then get started with an exterior paint that will last. You can get these types of lacquers in many paint colours. Just think of RAL colours, NCS colours, colours from a Sigma or Sikkens range, etc.

Do you like working with a one-pot system, which means you don't have to buy an additional primer? Then Sigma Amarol Triol Satin is what you are looking for. Not only does it save you space in your shed, the paint is also extremely dirt-resistant. You apply 3 coats of this for optimal results.

If you like to paint your front door or window shutters the same way our professionals do, use Sigma Tigron lacquer paints. For example, prime with Sigma Tigron Primer and finish with two coats of Sigma Tigron Extreme. This topcoat does not steal its name and is extremely resistant to weather conditions such as rain and sun.

In addition, this paint will beautify your front door or window frames for many years. In fact, your paint layer will remain intact for up to about 8 to 10 years, which is TOP for an exterior paint.

Besides, did you know that in the Netherlands it's very popular to paint your door with a high-gloss paint? The paint sometimes even looks like a mirror! Would you like to create this unique effect too? It's not that easy, but with this helpful blog, you'll learn how to paint a high-gloss door without streaks.

Paint for PVC or aluminium outside

For PVC or aluminium outside, it's best to go with a multi-primer that's permeable to water vapour. With this in mind and our highlighted products below, your doors and windows will look great.

For example, combine Trimetal Permacryl Multiprimer with two coats of Trimetal Permacryl Satin.

Or get going with the pro painter's favourite: apply synthetic Sigma multiprimer and finish with Sigma Tigron extreme satin. This paint will keep your windows and exterior doors looking great for about 8 to 10 years, even on the sunny side of your house.

Window frame paint

It's best to treat your window shutters or window frames on the outside of your house with a weather-resistant paint. If you want to preserve the natural wood colour of the window shutters, you should choose a transparent stain, which will protect your wood against rain and UV rays for a long time. With these products, you can also give your wood the look of oak, teak, mahogany, ...

Are you a do-it-yourselfer and want a transparent stain that can withstand some sun? Then Xyladecor Ramen & Deuren UV-Plus is your perfect match. Has your wood never been treated or painted before? Then use Xyladecor Primer Clear first.

Do you want to take your project to the next level? Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus is also resistant to UV rays and rain. But this stain has another big advantage: low dirt adhesion! In addition, we can also mix this paint in other transparent stain shades for you. Have your window frames or shutters never been treated before? Then don't forget to apply a coat of Sikkens Cetol Hls Plus first for a professional result.

Opaque stain for windows and doors

Are you more of a fan of an opaque stain? You can also use this to freshen up your windows and doors on the outside of your house. With an opaque stain, the grain structure remains somewhat visible, but not as much as with a transparent stain.

First protect your untreated wood with Xyladecor Primer Clear BP and then finish with two coats of Xyladecor Ramen & Deuren Dekkende beits (opaque stain).

Or follow a professional painter's favourite method: apply two to three coats of Sikkens Cetol BL Opaque, depending on the colour difference. This stain is resistant to UV rays and rain and permanently retains its elasticity, so you won't get cracks in your paint film.
