How to: paint the tiles

We regularly receive questions about painting all kinds of tiles. Understandably, painting tiles can be a challenge. Without the right material and method, the result is not always a success.

Fortunately, you can always count on our experts and their professional tips to help you get that perfect result after all! We've summarised all the do's and don'ts for you in a handy step-by-step guide to painting your tiles.

Step 1: preparation

First, you'll want to prepare your tiles for painting, which means making sure the paint can adhere to the surface properly. You do so by cleaning and degreasing the tiles thoroughly first. Especially with kitchen tiles, it is important to degrease well. You can do this with washing-up liquid and water or with a degreaser. To degrease enamelled tiles, it is best to use acetone. Always rinse everything again with clean water so that no product residue is left on the tiles.

It is also advisable to roughen your tiles, for instance with sandpaper. For slick floor tiles, you need slightly more specific material; it is best to roughen them with a diamond wheel. When you pour water on the tiles and it doesn't stay on the surface, you know the tiles have been roughened sufficiently.

Next, prepare your surroundings for painting. The toilet, bath or kitchen cabinets can be covered with ProGold Covering Foil, floors can be protected if necessary with ProGold Covering Cardboard, and skirting boards or other edges can be neatly taped with 3M Gold Masking Tape.

Step 2: paint the tiles

The next step is to apply a suitable primer and then paint. You can apply both the primer and final coats in the same way. Always start with a brush at the edges and over/around the joints.

Next, use a paint roller to apply paint in vertical lines, which you'll then roll out further horizontally nicely, and if necessary further vertically afterwards, for a nice and even result.

Finally, remove the tape while the paint is still wet, and done!

ℹ️ What paint do I need to paint my tiles?

Good question! For example, can you just use wall paint to paint your tiles? Or do you need a special tile paint by default?

You can actually use quite a few types of paint if you apply a good adhesion primer to the tiles first, such as Sigma Multiprimer, Sigma Multiprimer Aqua, Sikkens Redox AC Multiprimer or Trimetal Multiprimer Aqua Protect. The primer will ensure a good bond between the tile surface and the subsequent final coats.

Wall tiles in the kitchen or bathroom can subsequently be coated with a water-based paint or well-washable wall paint. Yes, wall paint! The most important thing is that the paint is suited for the environment in which you will use it. Sigma Pearl Clean Matt and Sikkens Alphacryl Perlino are wall paints that work perfectly for wall tiles in the kitchen or bathroom. If you're looking for a water-based lacquer, you can use the paints from the Sigma Tigron Aqua range, the Sikkens Rubbol BL range, or the Trimetal Permacryl PU range, among others. Both with wall paint and lacquer, it is best to apply two layers for thorough coverage.

Floor tiles require a different finishing paint. For that, it is best to use a special floor coating such as Sikkens Wapex 660. It is best to consult the technical data sheet of the product to know how many layers are needed and what the dilution rate is per layer.
