Applying Sikkens exterior lacquer on different surfaces

• Wood or MDF: With a Sikkens Rubbol Exterior Lacquer such as Sikkens Rubbol EPS or Sikkens Rubbol Satura, you can paint and protect exterior wood such as windows and doors from wear and tear.
• Metal or aluminium: With Sikkens Redox BL Metal Protect Satin, you'll get excellent adhesion and coverage on metal surfaces. The ideal Sikkens exterior lacquer for metals!

Does your Sikkens exterior lacquer need a primer?

If you're painting bare exterior wood, a primer is always necessary! The best Sikkens exterior lacquer primer is Sikkens Rubbol Primer. This is a solvent-based exterior paint primer that enhances adhesion with the topcoat and also ensures a durable, wear-resistant finish.

There is one exception: Sikkens Rubbol BL Exterior is a relatively new product launched for DIYers. With this exterior lacquer, you no longer need a separate primer, as it can be used as both basecoat and finish. Handy! Do note, however, that the average consumption of a single-pot system like this is higher, which means you'll need a bit more of it.

Sikkens exterior lacquer: How do you clean the equipment after painting?

Most Sikkens exterior lacquers are solvent-based, such as the Sikkens Rubbol lacquers with the purple packaging. If you've used such a lacquer, you'll need to rinse your equipment with white spirit or turpentine.

Did you use a water-based Sikkens exterior lacquer? You can recognise these by the “BL” in the name, such as Sikkens Rubbol BL Exterior or Sikkens Rubbol BL Azura. If you used a water-based exterior lacquer like this, you can simply clean your equipment with water.

How can you recognise a Sikkens exterior lacquer?

Easy – if you're looking to lacquer outdoor wood, you can identify the Sikkens products by the purple label. That alone tells you that you're putting a Sikkens exterior wood lacquer in your shopping basket.

Still unsure if you're dealing with an exterior lacquer? Check the packaging for the house symbol. If it has an arrow on the outside of the house, you can be sure the paint is suitable for outdoor use. You will see this symbol on every exterior paint, so also on exterior lacquers of other brands.
