How to: paint the facade

Are you looking to paint your facade or another wall outside? Good idea!

Here, you'll find step-by-step instructions on how to do so, along with the finest products for the job. Let's get started!

Step 1: Preparation

Step 2: Pre-treatment

Step 3: Painting

So, what does the perfect preparation look like? Well, that depends on a series of factors. For example, is there old (maybe flakey) paint on the facade, are there any damages, are there issues with moisture, and so on? Hence, it is important to check the condition of the walls before you start painting. Depending on the state they're in you will have more or less preparation work.  Click on the other tabs to see more.

Other than that, preparing the wall means covering any parts you don't want any paint on, the windows, the floor etc. You can use covering foil, protective cardboard and a good outdoor masking tape to do so.

Has the facade been painted before? Then it's best to verify whether the existing paint layers are still intact. If you can already spot flakey paint at first sight, you'll have to make sure those are removed.

To check if the paint is still well-adhering in other places, you can use a piece of tape. Just firmly stick it onto the wall, and then quickly pull it off again. If you can easily pull off part of the paint layer, that means the paint will have to be removed as well.
Furthermore, outdoor paints tend to become a bit powdery. Rub your hand across the surface to test if that is the case with the paint on your facade. You'll have some chalky dust on your hands. A fixating agent can definitely fix that 😉

In some cases, you'll quickly notice some repairing work will have to be done, for example when there are cracks in the wall. Small cracks can be filled up with a copolymer kit like Zwaluw Hybriseal 2PS or Toupret Fibacryyl, which is a filling paste for cracks subject to movement.

For somewhat bigger repairs, such as holes, you could use Toupret Murex or Polyfilla Pro X300.
Flattening out the surface can be done with products such as Dalapro Facade, Toupret Egaliss Facade or Polyfilla Pro E300.

Also important: how sensitive to moisture is your wall? Another really simple test: spray some water onto the (untreated) wall. Does the wall quickly absorb the water? Then it is highly likely quite porous. You will need a fixating agent to neutralise the absorption of the surface.

Rising damp in the walls can sadly not be fixed with just paint. Moisture always tries to find its way out, which will cause problems with the paint layer after a while. Should you want to paint an exterior wall that has moisture issues, it is therefore really important to have it treated first.

Loose dirt can easily be removed with a duster. For more persistent dirt, high-pressure cleaning is probably a good idea. Green deposits can be removed with a specialised product like AlgiAlgues.

Depending on the result of your wall check in step one, you may have already used a couple of pre-treatment products, such as a fixating agent. If you're working on an untreated wall, then now is a good time to bring in that fixating agent as well, to diminish the wall's absorption level. Other than that, you can now also apply an appropriate facade primer, such as Sigma Façade Prim Aqua.

If your facade is a bit older, you may want to (further) flatten it out with a facade filler like Dalapro Facade. If your facade doesn't need any other preparation work, you can continue to step 3. Equally so if you're using a one-pot-system, because you don't need a separate primer then.

Ready for the final step? You can now use one of the many quality facade paints from our webshop to start painting. Below, you will find some of our favourites. Just be aware that some types of walls outside require a more specialised paint. For example, for walls with a post-insulated cavity, it is better to use paint with high water vapour permeability. If your wall requires paint with high elasticity, then so-called flex paints are your go-to. A combination of the latter two is also possible.

And then: HOW? Use a broad paint roller, as it speeds up the process. We prefer rollers that can absorb and release a lot of paint. For more rough surfaces, you will need a paint roller with a flexible core. For higher parts of the facade, an extension tool for your paint roller can come in handy. Roll out the paint horizontally as much as you can, and always in the direction of the part you've painted right before.

💡 Try not to paint in bright sunlight, but try to paint where the sun has just left.
